Dr. Siriwan Pitayarngsarit, Director of the Tobacco Control Research and Knowledge Management Center (TRC), reported the purpose of this meeting which was to exchange knowledge on tobacco control in schools. This meeting was to set groups of researchers, academic staff and relevant organization interested in tobacco control in schools aiming to (1) exchange previous learning experiences about tobacco control in schools, (2) discuss gaps, and (3) create effective knowledge innovation by establishing an internal research network in the country to work on tobacco control in schools and to drive tobacco control policy.

Tobacco Control Research and Knowledge Management Center (TRC) has synthesized research questions on tobacco control in schools as described below:

  • Smoking Prevention
  • Can school media prevent adolescents from smokingHow should the school media operate
  • Do tobacco retail shops in/near schools result in smoking by school studentsHow
  • How should law enforcement operate to protect non – smokers in schools and to regulate the sale of cigarettes on school premises
  • What did the previous effective school activities for preventing smoking look like
  • Does the Basic Education Curriculum B.E. 2544 (A.D. 2001) cover enough and provide the necessary content on tobacco controlHow should the curriculum design and/or teaching methodologies be revised to effectively prevent smoking by students.

Smoking Cessation

What is the present cigarette cessation situation in schoolsWhich methods of cigarette cessation are effective. What is the correct method for checking the number of students smoking in schools, the number of those participating in smoking cessation, and for reporting smoking in schoolsWhich departments are relevant in using this informationDoes having a surveillance system in schools help to prevent smoking in schools. What can motivate teachers to provide activities preventing smoking in schools and to provide cessation services according to the surveillance system in schoolsWhat alternatives are possibleWhy is smoking cessation in schools not successfulWhat are the obstacles to success
