Menthol Cigarettes Are More Dangerous

Menthol Cigarettes Are More Dangerous Press Release : Action on Smoking and Health Foundation (ASH Thailand) Release date : For Immediate Release | The Action on Smoking and Health Foundation revealed news from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcing research results showing that menthol cigarettes are more dangerous than non-menthol cigarettes.

Smoking menthol cigarettes lets smokers feel coolness in the throat, a numbing effect which reduces irritation to smokers while smoking. This type of cigarette is easy to become addict to, and it is harder to quit than non-smoking cigarettes. The FDA announced that it should consider measures to control the mix of menthol that is put in cigarettes.

Prof. Dr. Prakit Vathesatogkit, the Executive Secretary of ASH Thailand, said that the Section 9 in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) advises member countries to pass legislation to ban cigarette companies from adding additives to cigarettes which makes smoking easier. These additives also include menthol. Brazil has banned adding menthol to cigarettes; however, most countries have not yet legislated banning menthol in cigarette due to objections from tobacco companies. Thailand has not yet issued such legislation.
