Heated tobacco products are associated with lower HDL-C, the ‘good cholesterol’
Hu H, Nakagawa T, Honda T, et al. Heated tobacco products and circulating high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. Open Access. Scientific Reports. 12, 17385 (2022). 17 October 2022. Authors assessed the association between heated tobacco product (HTP) use and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), the ‘good cholesterol’, associated with a lower risk of heart disease. In over 48,000 participants from two populations, they found that “exclusive HTP users had lower HDL-C concentrations than never smokers, although higher than exclusive cigarette smokers. Moreover, dual users had HDL-C concentrations similar to those in exclusive cigarette smokers.” In short, exclusive cigarette users and dual users with HTP had lowest HDL-C, indicating higher heart disease risk with HTP use alone and in the dual use of HTP by many cigarette smokers. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-22337-3
