E-cigarette Challenge: US students switch to disposables

Wang TW, Gentzke AS, Neff LJ, et al. Disposable E-Cigarette Use among U.S. Youth — An Emerging Public Health Challenge. New England Journal of Medicine. 16 Mar 2021. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2033943

“Among middle school students currently using any type of e-cigarette, disposable e-cigarette use was reported by 3.0% (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.7 to 5.4) in 2019, corresponding to 30,000 students, and by 15.2% (95% CI, 9.1 to 24.1) in 2020, corresponding to 80,000 students. Among high school students currently using any type of e-cigarettes, disposable e-cigarette use was reported by 2.4% (95% CI, 1.6 to 3.7) in 2019 (90,000 students) and 26.5% (95% CI, 20.0 to 34.2) in 2020 (790,000 students)… These findings reinforce the rapidly dynamic nature of the e-cigarette landscape and the need for clinicians, public health practitioners, and the general public to keep pace with these changes.”
