US Medical Societies Push for Stronger Regulation of E-Cigarettes
“Leaders of three major medical groups called on the Trump administration, Congress, and the FDA to take action on e-cigarettes and the public health risk these products pose.
“The failure of the federal government to appropriately regulate these products has allowed this problem to develop,” said Sara “Sally” Goza, MD, president-elect of the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP), during a briefing at the National Press Club Wednesday.”
She was joined by Jacqueline Fincher, MD, president-elect of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and Patrice Harris, MD, president of the American Medical Association (AMA) in calling for stronger action. For example, Harris “called on the FDA to move forward on regulations for e-cigarettes, including removing any unregulated products from the market, prohibiting marketing that targets youth, and “immediately” banning flavors including mint and menthol.”
With the number of lung injuries and deaths from vaping growing, pressure on the FDA is growing to act quickly to limit electronic cigarette promotion and sales.
