Smoking cessation, but not smoking reduction, decreases the risk of dementia

Jeong S, Park J, Han K, et al. Association of Changes in Smoking Intensity With Risk of Dementia in Korea. JAMA Netw Open. 19 Jan 2023;6(1): e2251506, “In this cohort study of 789 532 participants in Korea, smoking cessation was associated with decreased risk of dementia compared with sustained smoking. In addition, an increased risk of dementia was found in patients who reduced or increased the cigarettes smoked per day compared with those who sustained a consistent rate of consumption…. This study suggests that smoking cessation instead of smoking reduction should be emphasized in reducing the disease burden of dementia.”
