The 9th National Conference on Tobacco or Health : “Women and Tobacco: Focusing on marketing to woman”
The 9th National Conference on Tobacco or Health was at the exchange of knowledge stage among people who work on tobacco control including academic staff, researchers, lecturers, government officials, civil societies and other people. The conference opened for everyone to meet, discuss, listen, exchange and present academic papers conducted in the previous year aiming to develop tobacco control in the future. In 2010, WHO issued the slogan Women and Tobacco: Focusing on marketing to woman for its country members and Global Community with the intention to focus on Women. Thailand has acceded to this theme and also provided its own meaning targeted for driving Thai society with its own slogan Thai women are clever, not being slaves of the cigarette market. The purpose of this slogan was to show intention to work on tobacco control by womens groups, focused on preventing them from cigarette harms and to control tobacco consumption in their groups.
Objectives:
- To encourage exchange at the knowledge stage and through work experience on tobacco control among network allies.
- To find tobacco control work directions together.
- To collaborate and cooperate on tobacco control in groups/ organizations/public and private institutions and among all people.
The World Health Organization designated the World No Tobacco Day slogan as “Gender and tobacco with an emphasis on marketing to women,” placing specific importance on women. Thailand responded to this guideline by adopting the local slogan: “Smart Thai women are not slaves to the tobacco market.” Consequently, this year’s campaign focuses on protecting women’s health and preventing them from falling victim to the marketing strategies of tobacco companies. Furthermore, the conference in Thailand highlighted the power of women who have actively and strongly participated in tobacco control efforts.
