BMJ 2021; 373: n1303, This ‘Research Integrity’ report shows how tobacco industry influence was present in scientific papers suggesting that smokers are less likely to fall ill with Covid-19. Vaping industry interests and the Smokefree Foundation of Philip Morris have supported researchers who initially suggested that nicotine could be beneficial to Covid-19 infection. Subsequent research has disproved that smoking has a protective effect against Covid-19.

Comment: Note the recent meta-analysis in the TRC Research Summary that shows current and former smokers are at higher risk of mortality from COVID-19.
