Does nicotine pose a health risk?

Because nicotine is part of a complex chemical mixture produced by a burning cigarette, it has been hard to isolate its toxicological effects on human health. Chapter 20 in a recent book on the toxicological effects of e-cigarettes notes that there are “gaps in our current understanding of the biological effects of nicotine.” It presents current knowledge on nicotine’s effects on “the circulatory system, lungs, female and male reproductive organs, and developing fetus and critically reviews nicotine’s potential involvement in cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer and developmental defects.”
