Association Between Heated Tobacco Product Use and Quitting Combustible Cigarette Smoking

“Authors performed a cross-sectional study using data from the 2019 Community Health Survey in Korea. A total of 46,781 adult participants (current CC smokers and former CC smokers <5 years) were included, and Poisson regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between HTP use and quitting CC smoking among ever-CC smokers.

Among ever CC smokers, daily use of HTPs was positively associated with quitting CC smoking, but non-daily use of HTPs was inversely associated with quitting CC smoking. Former HTP use was linked to an increased likelihood of short-term quitting CC smoking but was significantly associated with CC smoking relapse after 1 year.”

Note: Daily use of HTPs substitutes the CC nicotine source for an HTP source. If used short term (for cessation), nicotine users relapse to combustible cigarettes within a year. Replacement of nicotine source is not cessation of the addiction to nicotine use, which results in adverse health effects.

French parliament votes to ban disposable e-cigarettes. Le Monde Article. 13 Feb 2025

“The French parliament on Thursday, February 13, voted to ban single-use electronic cigarettes, considered to be gateways to tobacco addiction for teenagers and harmful to the environment. The French parliament approved the bill with a final vote in the Senate’s upper house. After Belgium introduced such a ban, France became the second EU country.

Pre-filled disposable e-cigarettes, known as “puffs,” are popular with young people, can have a high nicotine content, come in many flavors including apple, watermelon, and cola, and are cheap.”

Comment: Cheap, flavored disposable cigarettes appeal to youth, and their use results in consequential damage to short and longer-term health outcomes. Stephen Hamann
