African American Intermittent Smoking Lowered in Randomized Trial

Cox LS, Nollen NL, Mayo MS, et al. Effect of Varenicline Added to Counseling on Smoking Cessation Among African American Daily Smokers: The Kick It at Swope IV Randomized Clinical Trial. JAMA. 14 June 2022;327(22):2201-2209. Black individuals smoking patterns differ from those of some other racial and ethnic groups, often smoking intermittently and menthol cigarettes. “In this randomized clinical trial that included 500 African American adults, counseling plus 12 weeks of varenicline treatment, compared with counseling plus placebo, showed a statistically significant improvement in rates of 7-day point prevalence smoking abstinence at week 26 (15.7% vs 6.5%).” https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2793252
