A recent article by RS Moheimani and colleagues at UCLA in JAMA Cardiology examined heart rhythms and oxidative loads in chronic e-cigarette only users. They found reduced heart rate variability, the variation in the time between heart beats. Reductions in heart rate variability are a well-established predictor of future heart attacks. This adds additional evidence that e-cigarette use increases cardiovascular risks.

Longitudinal surveys from middle and high school students from fall 2013 (wave 1) and spring 2014 (wave 2) were used to examine reasons for trying e-cigarettes as predictors of continued e-cigarette use over time. Several reasons for first trying e-cigarettes predicted continued use, including low cost, the ability to use e-cigarettes anywhere, and to quit smoking regular cigarettes.
