The September 30th issue of Time magazine in the US puts the e-cigarette situation simply, “How JUUL hooked kids and ignited a public health crisis.” While the various kinds of electronic cigarettes used to be a central concern, the rise of JUUL, which now has more than 50% of the market in the US, has meant that JUUL is the main focus of the US Food and Drug Administration and the Trump administration. Although a final decision on JUUL will not be made until May 2020, the FDA is regulating JUUL more closely with many states and localities banning its flavored products, and San Francisco banning the product altogether. If JUUL cannot prove to the FDA that its products protect public health by reducing the use of combustible cigarettes by 2020, the FDA can remove them from the market. Proving public health benefits will not be easy with increasing cases of lung injuries and deaths from vaping in the US, and with many adverse long-term effects of using e-cigarettes possible from new and emerging research.
